A multiple graded stakes winning two-year-old and graded stakes winning
three-year-old, THE CLIFF'S EDGE is bred on the same Gulch/Northern Dancer
cross as Champion, classic winner and Champion Sire, Thunder Gulch. This
is
also a version of the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross which has also
produced Distorted Humor and Fusaichi Pegasus (both, like THE CLIFF'S EDGE,
out of Danzig mares), as well as Kingmambo, Elusive Quality, Grand Slam,
End
Sweep, Smoke Glacken and Victory Gallop.
Stallions bred on this pattern have done very well when bred back over
Northern Dancer line mares. Northern Dancer lines which have done
particularly well under Gulch include Storm Bird (sire of Storm Cat, who
should work particularly well here, and of Summer Squall), Lyphard,
Nureyev
and Nijinsky II. Inbreeding to the broodmare sire of a stallion is another
pattern which can pay dividends, and it could well be worth considering
breeding THE CLIFF'S EDGE to mares by sons of his own maternal grandsire,
Danzig.
Gulch and Danzig have both enjoyed success with mares descending from
Ribot,
with Gulch working over mares from the Graustark, His Majesty and Tom
Rolfe
branches of the Ribot sire line. Gulch and his sons have four stakes
winners, two graded, out of mares from the Blushing Groom line, and this
is
another strain which has combined successfully with Danzig. Mt. Livermore
particularly appeals. Another strain which appeals here from the
standpoint
of both Gulch and Danzig is that of Roberto, the broodmare sire of CCA
Oaks
winner Tweedside by a son of Gulch.
Thunder Gulch's outstanding son, Point Given, was inbred to Gulch's grandsire,
Raise
a Native, with the second strain coming via Turkoman, a son of Mr.
Prospector's genetic relative, Alydar, and Alydar looks a very good strain
to try here.
