| Making his turf debut and racing around two turns for the first time, MACIAS, the son of Freshman Sire PURGE, won the $72,150 Eddie Logan Stakes going one mile over the firm course at Santa Anita!
MACIAS has plenty of early speed, but trainer Bob Baffert had been telling all who would listen that
he was teaching the talented colt to rate. Breaking sharply, MACIAS wanted to go, but responded
when jockey Victor Espinoza asked him to settle into a stalking position around the clubhouse turn and down
the backstretch. He commenced his bid coming off the final turn and the lead was his at the top of the stretch.
He opened up a clear lead and when a closer began a solid move, he was asked to quicken and he finished
with a final eighth in :11 3/5 to win by three-quarters of a length.
“I expected him to show speed today, but he was under control and he settled real nice with me around the
first turn," said Espinoz. "Going to the far turn, I had a lot of horse under me, but I didn’t want to take the lead
too soon. I waited as long as I could and when I asked him, he really accelerated. Through the stretch, I knew
the other horse (Alfarabi) was running, but there was no worry.”
“Victor did just what I wanted, hold him back,” Baffert said. “That’s why I rode him; he’s strong enough to do
that. It’s nice to win this race named for Eddie Logan. ‘Give me the leather and we’ll get it together.’ That’s
what he used to say.”
The Eddie Logan celebrates the memory of Santa Anita’s colorful shoeshine attendant who ran his stand from
opening day, Dec. 25, 1934, until his death at the age of 98 on Jan. 31, 2008.
MACIAS races for Zayat Stables, LLC, who purchased the colt for $170,000 at the 2008 Keeneland
September Yearling Sale. Bred in Kentucky by Rankin, Cummings, Drake and Grant, MACIAS was
produced by the Tropular (GB) mare, Azelna (FR). |
